Dare County runners finished at the front of the pack in three of the four cross country races run last Saturday at the Bo Run at H. Boyd Lee Park in Winterville.

Leading almost from the start, First Flight’s Morgan Miller captured first place in the girls 5k championship cross country run. Her time of 19:25.28 was more than 20 seconds ahead of second place finisher Viola Korir from Heritage High School.

With two other runners – Tatum Dermatas and Moira Furr – among the top 10 finishers, the First Flight girls team took second place behind Heritage.

Competition in the girls invitational 5k cross country run saw Manteo’s Madison Flynn take first place with a time of 20:06.88, well ahead of teammate Meredith Gaskill in second with a 20:54.63. Having all five scoring runners finish among the top 10 helped the Manteo Redskins score a team victory over five other teams.

Rounding out the day’s competition, Manteo’s Samuel Head was third in the boys 5k invitational run with a time of 17:40.51 behind winner Chris Haro (South Lenoir) at 16:51.86 and Dennis Gutierrez (Camden County) in second with a time of 17:39.27. Camden County had the best team score, Manteo was fourth, First Flight was sixth and Ocracoke High School 12th in a field of 13 schools with 129 runners.

“I’m very pleased with all our runners,” said Manteo coach Emily Dinoto. “Everyone had a season best or a personal record today and our girls placed first and the boys were fourth, which is probably the best ever finish for a Manteo High School team at the Bo Run. At least as long as I have been here.”

The annual Bo Run is named for DH Conley High School cross country team captain Bo Thompson who was killed in a 2005 car accident during the drive home from a football game.

Within just a few weeks of Greenville’s tragic loss, a partnership between DH Conley’s cross country team, Greenville Recreation and Parks and Oak Mount Baptist Church was formed and a high school 5k cross country invitational meet was organized in Thompson’s memory. Today the meet is one of, if not the largest, high school cross country meet in eastern North Carolina.

There were no local runners or schools in the boys 5k championship cross country run.
