The Manteo varsity baseball team added two wins to its record this week, both against Hertford County High School.

Playing at Ahoskie on Tuesday, Manteo escaped with a 3-2 win after 90 minutes of mostly routine balls and strikes followed by two innings of hand-wrenching excitement.

Manteo posted one run right out of the gate and led 3-0 after four innings. A dropped pop fly in the bottom of the fifth allowed two Hertford County Bears to score and the inning ended with a runner on third.

Although both the sixth and seventh innings were scoreless, both teams were able to put multiple runners on base before Manteo was able to clinch the win.

Playing at Manteo the next day, April 26, a more confident Redskins team earned a conference game win against Hertford County with a 13-5 score.

After Manteo posted two runs in the first, Hertford County moved ahead with five runs in the second but 11 more Redskin runs put the game out of reach for the visiting team.

The wins give the Manteo varsity baseball team a 7-10 overall record and sixth place in the Northeastern Coastal 2A/3A Conference with a 4-8 season. Hertford County is now 2-19 overall and 1-11 in conference play.

Manteo is scheduled to play again at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 1, at home against Cape Hatteras.
