First Flight distance runner Tatum Dermatas won a May 19 North Carolina High School Athletic Association state championship in the 3A girls 3200 meter run to help her Nighthawks finish seventh in the state meet team standings.

After running most of the race on the NC A&T Irwin Belk Track at Greensboro behind North Lincoln’s Macy Parks, Dermatas pulled ahead on the final lap to clock a personal best 10:59.01. Her time was more than four seconds ahead of teammate Morgan Miller’s second place 11:03.85. Parks placed third in the field of 16 runners at 11:08.89.

Also in the Friday competition, Currituck County girls finished 42nd and Currituck boys were 45th.

On Saturday, May 20, Manteo girls placed 23rd and Manteo boys finished 30th in the NCHSAA State Championship 2A division.
