First Flight High School cross country runners captured individual and team first place finishes for boys and girls in Wednesday’s Northeastern Coastal 2A/3A Conference Meet #3 at Manteo.

In spite of a three digit heat index, senior distance ace Judah LaCroix claimed a third straight individual victory leading his Nighthawks team to a first place finish over scoring teams from Manteo and Camden. With six runners among the first 10 finishers, it was an easy win for the First Flight team.

It was not, however, a walk-away win. With points corresponding to runner’s place finish for the first five runners from each team to cross the finish, Manteo’s Samuel Head in fifth place and Ezekiel Leary in ninth foiled a First Flight perfect low score of 15.

Also, with incomplete teams in the field of 44 runners was Currituck County, Hertford County, John A. Holmes, Northeastern and Ocracoke high schools. Nicholas Cole, Colin Midgett and Jahza Ferebee were the top runners for their respective Ocracoke, Cape Hatteras and Currituck County teams.

The girls race for the second consecutive week saw First Flight sophomore Morgan Miller pace her team to the winner’s circle followed closely by teammate Moira Furr in second. Not far behind the Manteo duo of Madison Flynn and Meredith Gaskill took third and fourth. In a field of almost four dozen runners, Ayla Baker (Currituck), Gabriella Baker (Cape Hatteras) and Melanie Perez (Ocracoke) were the leading runners for their respective teams.

“Both our teams continued their hot streaks versus Manteo, Currituck, Camden, Edenton, Ocracoke and Northeastern,” said First Flight head coach Dan Murray.

Murray went on to say it was encouraging to see six of his runners among the top 10 finishers. In addition, Graham Evans made a big performance jump to finish 13th overall while Kingston Haynes, Wesley Robinson and Braxton Rose each put in solid work.

“On the side,” he continued, “Morgan Miller won for the second straight week and Moira Furr was a close second. It was also nice to see Kayla Folkes, Nellie Hall, Shelby Chercka and Alexa Hallac round out the top ten, with Bekah Newell, Chessa Woods, and Claire Meads all finishing in the top 20. Both our teams are now undefeated in conference play.”
