Letter to the Editor: Reader calls for mascot change

To the Editor:

As the Dare County Commissioners prepare the annual appropriations for the local schools, I urge them to remind the school board that many of the visitors and residents who provide the tax base are less than pleased with the continued display of the current Manteo High School athletic mascot.

MHS is the only public school in North Carolina that still forces its multi-ethnic student body to operate under this
racially-insensitive banner.

Get the latest headlines sent to you

Perhaps 2024 is the year to release the MHS students from the yoke of this moniker. This would be an appropriate salute to the 440th anniversary of the 1584 encounter that the English settlers had with the man called Manteo.
