Folkes wins 3A state title

Athletes from Currituck, First Flight and Manteo high schools closed out the regular indoor track season on Saturday, February 10 in state meet competition at the JDL Fast Track facility in Winston-Salem.

Freshman distance runner Kayla Folkes (First Flight) had the best overall individual finish of the afternoon winning the 3A girls 1000 meter run with a personal best time of 3:04.38. Teammate Moira Furr was fifth with a time of 3:09.86.

Finishing sixth in the combined 1A/2A pole vault that morning, Caroline Gay cleared a personal best 8 feet 6 inches.

Currituck girls placed seventh in the 4×800 relay with a time of 10:43.53, setting a new school record.

Team results show that Manteo girls scored three points to tie with Bunker Hill for 36th place out of the 44 teams scoring points. Manteo boys, with 4 points, were also tied in a field of 50 teams for 36th place with Fairmont, Cherokee, Bunker Hill and Eastern Wayne.

In 3A team competition with 40 schools First Flight girls placed seventh with 29 points and Currituck County scored two points to tie for 35th with Cedar Ridge, East Wake, Lee County and Northeast Guilford.

Out of the 44 boys 3A teams scoring points, First Flight tied for 23rd with Ashbrook, East Wake, Harnett Central and Statesville. Currituck County and A.C. Reynolds each scored three points to tie for 35th place.
