Russell Lee Berry

Russell Lee Berry, 81, of Manns Harbor, died January 2, 2020 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a short illness.  Born in Hyde County on May 9, 1938, he was the son of the late Cecil Lee Berry and Mabel Ruth Watson Berry.

After graduating from Manteo High School, Russell made his living as a very skilled mechanic and commercial fisherman, but his passion in life was deer hunting and collecting driftwood from the waters of Eastern North Carolina to sell to various merchants all over the state. He was known locally as “The Driftwood Man.”

Russell is survived by brother Stafford Berry (Jean) of Wanchese and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Carroll Berry, Ray Berry and Jimmy Berry along with sisters Gladys Wilson, Linda Pentecost and Nancy Ann Berry.

A memorial service is planned for January 19 at 2 p.m. at the Roanoke Acres Church of Christ located at 1104 US Hwy 64/264 in Manteo.
