Mayor Luther H. Daniels released a statement to the public late Friday afternoon “to clarify the statements which have appeared in recent newspaper articles,” Daniels said.

The statement reads:

“First, Chief Day was never told by the Mayor or any other Town Official to cease investigation of the Stacy Stanton murder investigation. He was told that if his investigation took him outside the Town limits, Town administration needed to know when and where he was to be going.

“Second, a statement from the Town was not made until a full assessment of the facts regarding the status of the investigation and Chief Day’s resignation was considered by the Board of Commissioners. This assessment was made at the Town meeting Wednesday, March 7, 1990.

“Third, Manteo has never released its jurisdiction of the investigation but has welcomed and received valuable assistance from dedicated officers of the State Bureau of Investigations and the Dare County Sheriff’s Department. The results of Manteo’s investigation are now being compiled for transmittal to the District Attorney for appropriate action.

“Fourth, the Town of Manteo Codified Ordinances delegate the Mayor to be the Chief Executive Officer of the Town. As such, the overall safety, health and well being of the citizens of Manteo rest on me. Please be assured that this concept has been considered throughout this trying time,” Daniels concluded.
