Pedestrian-vehicle incident in Currituck sends student to hospital

A pedestrian-vehicle incident occurred shortly after school on Monday, August 30, 2021, opposite the Currituck County high school/middle school complex, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

An 11-year old girl with her brother crossed Caratoke Highway, US 158 successfully, but the girl stepped back into the eastbound lane to pick up something she dropped.

The driver of a Dodge passenger vehicle coming eastbound in the outside lane tried to stop in time, but was unable to and hit the girl, reports the State Highway Patrol.

The student was airlifted by Nightingale to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Va.

The investigation by the State Highway Patrol is ongoing.

Also responding to the incident were Currituck Fire and Emergency Medical Services and Currituck County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
